You start stocking up on your favourite sunscreen at the beginning of the summer, but you should be doing this year-round.

A common misconception people have with sunscreen is that you only need to protect your skin when the weather is warmer. We can’t stress this enough… UV rays will harm your skin whether you are outside in January or June. Protecting your skin should be part of your daily regime.

Different types of UV rays

UVA: “Aging Rays” and penetrate deepest into the skin and cause wrinkling and pigmentation.

UVB: “Burning Rays” penetrate to outer layers of skin cause burning and skin cancer.

UVC: shortest wavelengths and not long enough to come into contact with skin.

Different types of sunscreen

Mineral sunscreen (includes zinc oxide and titanium dioxide): The ingredients are small particles that sit on the skin’s surface and physically prevent UV rays from penetrating the skin. You can apply mineral sunscreens on top of other skin-care products, like your daily moisturizer and serums.

Chemical sunscreens: These allow UV light into the skin. Once the light is absorbed into the skin, the chemicals in the sunscreen (like oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate, and octinoxate) create a chemical reaction in which UV light is converted to heat, and the heat dissipates from the skin.

How do I pick the best sunscreen for my skin?

We recommend using at least SPF30 or above, even in the winter. It is best to have a separate SPF than a moisturizer that has SPF in it. Molecule sizes differ and your skin needs the best of both products, not diluted strength of the SPF in a combined moisturizer. Make sure to apply sunscreen every day.
